The Kaidan Suite recreates the mood of an Edo-era performance of hyakumonogatari kaidankai, in which ghost stories were told by candlelight. While drawing from traditional Japanese tonal systems and narrative conventions, the Kaidan Suite also borrows from the languages of 20th-century classical music and modal jazz improvisation to capture the emotional pacing of hyakumonogatari kaidankai. As in many kaidan, feminism is a distinct subtext of the suite; numerous examples can be given of traditional Japanese ghost stories that are concerned with injustices against women.
